Tis the fallacy of presentism. It is hard to get at the truth of the past if one's views from the present are constantly distorting the information.

Perhaps another example would be the sweatshops our economy is currently built on. I mean, I don't think I know anyone who would argue that child labour and exploitation of workers is acceptable, but I also don't think I know anyone willing to give up mass produced consumer goods. More interesting, I'm not sure I know any would who could give up mass produced consumer goods and still maintain the lifestyle they've been brought up to expect. We're not paid enough money in our jobs to live our lives the way we do without the exploitation of labour, either here or abroad.

Maybe the same is true of the slavery-era south and our great-great-grandchildren will say the same about us that we say about our great-great-grandparents. But I'm sure they'll have their own blind eyes to turn. Seems to be the way of the world...

Dylan, you make an excellent point. We outsource the labor overseas to where wages are cheaper and the laws are looser.

From someone who makes a living teaching history, that's one hell of a compliment. Thanks, Murphy.
